12. Women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have not attained a position of full equality with men and may never get the chance. Although the Mobutu regime  paid lip service to the  important role of women in society, and although women enjoy some legal  lights, custom , and legal constraints  still limit their opportunities.

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against women in 2006 expressed concern that in the post -war transition period, the promotion of women's  human right  and gender  equality is not seen as a priority.

There are many traditional wildlife in the  Democratic Republic of the Congo, but I introduced Bonobo  and peafowl.

Bonobo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the only country in the world in which  Bonobos (Pygmy Chimpanzees)  are found in the world. The Bonobos  previously called the Pgymy Chimpanzee and less often, the dwarf of gracile chimpanzee, is a great ape and one of the two species making up the genus pan.

Peafowl
The Congo peafowl is a species of peafowl.  The male is a large bird of up the 70 cm (28 in) in  length. Its features are deep blue with metallic green  and violate tinge. It has bare red neck  skin, grey feet, and a black tail with fourteen features. The female is generally a chestnut  brown bird with a black abdomen, metallic green back ,and a short chestnut bro chest.

9. Environmental problems

At the heart of central Africa's great rainforests lies Kisangani, a small city in the Democratic Republic of Congo( D R C) some 1,300  miles from the mouth of the Congo River. The town began as a Belgian trading post, Stanleyville, and was Conrad's model for Kurtz's  inner station in Heart of Darkness. No roads connect Kisangani to the rest  of the world; over the past two decades they have all collapsed and been retaken by the jungle. Even river navigation is blocked beyond here, as a massive  course of falls stretches for sixty miles  years. upstream.

At the global level, Congo's forests act as the plant's  second lung, counterpart to the rapping carbon that could  otherwise become carbon dioxide, the main cause of global warming .

If these woodlands are deforested, the carbon they trap will  be released in the atmosphere. Environmentalists say that if deforestation continues unabated, by 2050 the D R C  could  release as much carbon  dioxide as Britain has in the past sixty. On the ground, this would likely mean desertification, mass migration, hunger, banditry and war.

For example, this company came here just to cut trees,  and from the beginning  it has been nothing  but lies, lies, lies, say the chief, Frederic  Makofi, as several men gathered around nod their approval, Chief  Makofi wants clinics and schools  and buildings  materials  and transportation.

So the D R C needs sustainable forest industries, scientific management of the resource and subsidies from industrialized  economies to preserve the forest for the sake of climate stability.

6.International Relations

Several watershed events have influenced the evolution of African international relations since the late nineteenth century. In the aftermath of the Berlin conference of 1884-1885, independence Africa( except for Ethiopia and Liberia). Ceased to exist ,and African international relationship were controlled by the European colonial powers.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, for example,Mobutu Sese Seko assumed power in 1965 through a military coup d'etat supported by the U.S.government  and gradually concentrated all power around the office of the present. Often unwilling to listen to his foreign policy experts within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and having effectively silenced other potential centers of opposition, most notable by disbanding the Zairian National Assembly,Mobutu  made a speech before the UN General Assembly in which he announced his decision to rupture all diplomatic  ties with Israel. This decision was notable in that it was made without  any warning to the Nixon  White  House and effectively derailed state Department efforts to win  congressional passage of a Zairian foreign aid  bill

3. History

Most of Africa history influenced the colonial experience and continue to be a powerful force shaping post colonial Africa.
Formerly the Belgian Congo, this territory was inhabited by ancient Negrito peoples (Pygmies), who were pushed into the mountains by Bantu and Nilotic invaders. The American correspondent Henry M. Stanley navigated the Congo River in 1877 and opened the interior to exploration. Commissioned by King Leopold II of the Belgians, Stanley made treaties with native chiefs that enabled the king to obtain personal title to the territory at the Berlin Conference of 1885.
But within weeks of independence, the Katanga Province, led by Moise Tshombe, seceded from the new republic, and another mining province, South Kasai, followed. Belgium sent paratroopers to quell the civil war, and the United Nations flew in a peacekeeping force.

Since independence, its instability has been a destabilizing influence for its neighbors in Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa. At peace, it could become the hub of an African renaissance.
